1. Bite down on gauze to stop bleeding. Right after an extraction, the first step in oral care after extraction is to control bleeding by biting down on the gauze pad your dentist provides. Apply steady pressure for about 30-45 minutes to help a stable blood clot form. This clot is critical for the healing process, so resist the temptation to disturb it by touching the site with either your tongue or fingers. If bleeding persists, try a clean piece of gauze and maintain pressure.
2. Avoid eating or drinking immediately afterward. Reaching for a snack or beverage immediately after your procedure may seem tempting, but it is essential to wait at least two hours before consuming anything. This gives your mouth time to form a proper blood clot. Once you are ready, stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, or even scrambled eggs for the first 24 hours. Skip the straws to avoid suction that can disrupt your healing process.
